Houston Filmmaker Showcase
Hosted monthly at the historic River Oaks Theatre and in partnership with SWAMP. This ongoing series highlights the work of local filmmakers across a wide range of forms, including narrative, documentary, experimental, and animated films, as well as music videos and new media projects.
Each screening is followed by a filmmaker Q&A, providing audiences with the opportunity to engage directly with the artists and participate in meaningful conversations about the creative process. Our mission is to cultivate an inclusive space where Houston’s creative community can connect, collaborate, and thrive.
Why Submit?

We welcome submissions from filmmakers who are eager to share their work and engage with Houston’s dynamic film scene. Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis, allowing new voices and perspectives to be regularly highlighted throughout the year.
Scheduling and Notifications
Because FilmFreeway is designed for film festivals rather than recurring monthly showcases, it does not allow us to display all individual event dates within the platform. Our tentative 2026 showcase dates are listed below and are subject to change. Please refer to our website for the most up-to-date schedule. If your film is selected to screen at one of these events, you will be notified by email in advance.

About Swamp
The Southwest Alternate Media Project (SWAMP) cultivates and elevates the next generation of visual storytellers in the southwest. Established in 1977, SWAMP is a nonprofit media arts organization based in Houston, Texas.
The Southwest Alternate Media Project was a co-sponsor of the Houston Film Critics Society Awards 2010 and has provided production support for several notable feature films, including Last Night at the Alamo. SWAMP also recognized and supported the work of now noted filmmakers Richard Linklater, Robert Rodriguez, and Jane Campion. SWAMP was recognized and thanked for its assistance in the credits of three movies, Interface (1985) directed by Andy Anderson, Slacker (1991) directed by Richard Linklater, and Hannah and the Dog Ghost (1981) directed by Ken Harrison.

Awards & Prizes
If your short film is selected, you will be featured across HCAS/SWAMP and The River Oaks Theatre social media channels and receive two complimentary tickets to your screening.
At the conclusion of each monthly showcase, audience members will vote for their favorite films of the evening. One film will be awarded the Audience Choice award for the month.
Monthly Audience Choice winners will be:
– Eligible to screen at the annual Best of the Year Showcase in December.
– Awarded two All Access Passes to the Houston Cinema Arts Festival (Showcases after the festival will receive passes to the following year)
– Considered for submission to Vimeo programmers for potential Staff Pick consideration.
Rules & Terms
Eligibility & Submission Requirements
Local Connection
Films do not need to be shot in Houston; however, at least one key creative must be Houston-based. Eligible roles include director, producer, or writer.
Runtime Limit
Films may not exceed 20 minutes, including credits. Exceptions may be considered in rare circumstances at the discretion of the programming team.
Completion Date
Only films completed on or after January 1, 2023 are eligible for submission.
Accepted Formats & Genres
We primarily screen narrative and documentary short films. Experimental works, animation, music videos, trailers, episodic content, and new media projects are also welcome, provided they meet the runtime requirement.
Language Policy
Films must be in English or include English subtitles.
Content Advisory
Please include a content warning for films that contain mature, sensitive, or potentially triggering material. This information helps us appropriately inform audiences.
Premiere Status
Premiere status is not required. Films that have screened publicly or are available online are eligible. Priority may be given to projects that have not been actively screened in Houston.
Works in Progress
Both completed films and works in progress are eligible for submission. If selected, filmmakers may be invited to share an early cut and participate in post-screening discussions to receive audience feedback.
Attendance & Participation
If accepted, at least one filmmaker or key creative may be asked to attend the screening and participate in a post-screening Q&A, either in person or, when possible, virtually. Limited exceptions may be made with advance notice.
Programming & Scheduling
Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis. Selected films may be programmed in any quarter at the discretion of the curatorial team. Submission does not guarantee placement in a specific month.

Notification Policy
Decline notifications are sent on a rolling basis. Filmmakers whose work is shortlisted will be contacted directly. Shortlisting does not guarantee acceptance. Films are officially accepted only upon receipt of an Official Acceptance Notice.
Screening Format & Exhibition
All selected films will be exhibited at the historic River Oaks Theatre using professional theatrical presentation standards. Filmmakers will receive technical specifications upon acceptance.
Terms & Conditions
By submitting your film, you acknowledge and agree that:
– You have read, understood, and agree to comply with all submission guidelines and policies.
– You are authorized to submit the film and confirm it is not subject to any pending litigation.
– You hold Houston Filmmakers Showcase, Houston Cinema Arts Society (HCAS), SWAMP, and all affiliated partners harmless from any claims arising from your submission or exhibition.
– You confirm that you hold all necessary rights, including music, images, and performances.
– You grant permission for Houston Filmmakers Showcase to use stills, titles, trailers, and descriptive material for promotional and marketing purposes.
– You consent to your submission being downloaded and reviewed privately for programming consideration prior to official notification.
