Widows

Four armed robbers are killed in an explosive heist attempt. Their widows—with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities—take fate into their hands to forge a future on their own terms. Based on a popular U.K. television series of the same name, created by Lynda LaPlante, Widows is directed, co-written and produced by Academy Award©-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen, whose 12 Years a Slave won the 2014 Academy Award© for Best Picture. The screenplay is co-written by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl). McQueen and Flynn moved the TV series’ setting from England to Chicago, Flynn’s hometown.

What’s so powerful for me about this story is that these four women from different racial, social, and financial backgrounds came together to achieve their common goal. They understood that by working together they were capable of anything.”
